My Story
Hello! My name is Michael Kern. After training to be a teacher and teaching 4th and 5th grade science in New Orleans, Louisiana, I went to Columbia University where I earned my doctorate in School Psychology. I’m a licensed psychologist and a nationally certified school psychologist. I have over 20 years of experience in child care and development.
I have expertise in teaching, memory and learning, study skills, youth development, social emotional learning, and mental health and student support. I have published on a variety of topics including memory and study skills, the interaction between emotions and learning, school climate, and bullying.
I currently serve as the Director of Student Support at Interlochen Arts Academy, a boarding high school. I have led numerous data-driven initiatives to reshape student support and worked with countless families and faculty to help them understand children's development and needs. I also have experience speaking to families and faculty about youth development and education.
I believe sustainable growth in schools comes from focusing on the students in front of you. The most powerful tools to creating that growth are helping students, faculty, and families understand student growth and developing consistent data-driven processes to ensure you can build the right relationships and boundaries to help students grow.
I would love to help your school community achieve its goals.
